The Government of Canada tabled proposed regulations that would impose new reporting requirements on firearms businesses that import or manufacture firearms.
These regulations will require importers and manufacturers to provide detailed technical information about each shipment or batch of firearms to the Canadian Firearms Program (CFP). This reporting would be required once for each make and model in every shipment or batch, regardless of the firearm’s classification.
While the proposal does not directly affect individual firearm owners, it adds another layer of bureaucracy for the businesses that firearm owners rely on. These regulations, like the firearm prohibitions before them, are unlikely to enhance public safety.
The proposed regulations will be published in Canada Gazette, Part I on December 28, 2024. Comments will be accepted there until February 10, 2025. Firearms businesses are encouraged to participate in the consultation process and share their feedback once comments are open.
CSAAA will be meeting with the Firearm Policy team early in the New Year for a technical briefing and consultation on these proposed regulations.
