CSAAA executives met with the Federal Firearms Policy team as well as members of the Canadian Firearms Program to discuss incoming magazine regulations under Bill C-21. Progress has been slow, and there is no ETA for when the regulations will become law due to recent government changes.

The need for proper industry consultation was emphasized and policymakers working on this file will be in contact with CSAAA before publishing proposed regulations for the comment stage. Although policymakers may proceed with their marching orders regardless of what the industry says, it is important for proper expert consultation to protect Canadian small businesses and an important part of Canada’s heritage.

The policymakers were warned that overly restrictive magazine rules could harm the industry and lawful sporting community, as Canada’s market is too small for manufacturers to adapt to any regulations that are too strict. CSAAA also stressed the need for plenty of notice, given the industry’s six-month order cycle. We also reminded them of how crucial clear legal definitions of magazines and barrels are to protect businesses.

A potential early election could further delay or completely halt the magazine regulations. Based on discussions, these firearms magazine regulations are unlikely to take effect for at least six months. CSAAA will keep members updated as this progresses and changes.
